I’m writing a story about this. So please tell me what pregnant leukemia patients do to keep the baby and herself safe. Tell me about the medications too.

The fetus is aborted or the woman will more than likely die, probably along with the baby. So, enjoy writing that story. She couldn’t take the medications because of the pregnancy or she aborts the fetus and gets her chemo.

It would depend on how far along she is in her pregnancy and what type of leukemia she has. If she had chronic leukemia, she may be able to put off treatment until later in her pregnancy or even until after the birth. People live with chronic leukemia for years and usually only have to take oral medications for treatment. Acute leukemia is a different story. It can be fatal within a few short months so treatment must be started ASAP. The chemotherapy regimen is intense – including chemotherapy given into the spine. Some of the drugs used like methotrexate and cyclophosphamide can cause birth defects. If she were diagnosed with acute leukemia and was in her first trimester, she would have to abort the fetus in order to begin treatment. However, if she were further along in her pregnancy, she may be able to undergo chemotherapy while pregnant with very close monitoring of the baby (it has been done before!). Of course, it all depends on each person’s individual circumstances.
